BREAKING: Court Strikes Down Biden's Title IX Rewrite: Education Department Restores 2020 Rule Protecting Women’s Rights and Free Speech
I break down what this means for schools nationwide

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Education announced today that it will enforce the Trump administration’s 2020 Title IX Rule, which governs how schools and colleges address sex-based discrimination and harassment. The decision follows a federal court ruling that blocked the Biden administration’s 2024 rewrite of Title IX regulations.

In a “Dear Colleague” letter, the department’s Office for Civil Rights informed K-12 schools and higher education institutions that the previous rule would be reinstated nationwide. The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky recently ruled that the 2024 Title IX changes were unlawful and could not be enforced in educational settings.

The return to the 2020 rule reaffirms Title IX protections based on biological sex and strengthens due process for students involved in Title IX proceedings, according to the department. Officials also noted that the change helps protect free speech on campuses.

Resources pertaining to the 2020 Title IX Rule, now applicable again, are available here.

“The Biden administration’s failed attempt to rewrite Title IX was an unlawful abuse of regulatory power and an egregious slight to women and girls,” said Craig Trainor, acting assistant secretary for civil rights. “Under the Trump administration, the Education Department will champion equal opportunity for all Americans, including women and girls, by protecting their right to safe and separate facilities and activities in schools, colleges, and universities.”

The Biden administration's proposed revisions had sought to expand Title IX protections to include gender identity, among other changes. Critics argued that the revisions would undermine privacy and fairness for women and girls in school athletics and facilities. Republican attorneys general led the legal challenge that resulted in the court's decision.

The Education Department's announcement signals that schools must adhere to the 2020 guidelines, which prioritize due process for students accused of misconduct and maintain protections based on biological sex. Schools and colleges will need to adjust policies and procedures to comply with the reinstated rule.

LANSING, Mich - Former U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm awarded $14 billion in below-market loans to Michigan energy companies before leaving office, despite an Energy Department alert about conflicts of interest.

Inspector General Teri L. Donaldson warned Granholm’s undersecretary for energy infrastructure in December that the Energy Loan Programs Office was administering more than $385 billion in new loans without an effective system to manage conflicts of interest.

“This poses a significant risk of fraud, waste, and abuse,” Donaldson wrote. “The projects funded with this authority, which involve innovations in clean energy, advanced transportation, and tribal energy are inherently risky in part because these projects may have struggled to secure funding from traditional sources such as commercial banks and private equity investors.” Click here to read more.

LOS ANGELES, CALIF - A momentous moment for the wildlife world was captured on camera after a live Mount Lyell shrew was photographed.

According to the California Academy of Sciences, these shrews are the only-known mammal species in the state that had not been previously photographed.

A wildlife photographer and a couple of student scientists joined forces with the University of California-Berkeley’s Museum of Vertebrate Zoology and came up with a plan.

They captured a couple of shrews in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains and took a few photos before setting the creatures free.

LANSING, Mich - Michigan Democrats calling for the death of President Donald Trump’s supporters are now “mobilizing for action.”

“To peeps out there trying find emotional shelter in this storm of radical right-wing Republican terrorism … please know that people in our community are mobilizing for action,” Lenawee County Democratic Party Chairman Bill Swift posted to Facebook on Monday. “You can be a part of that … anyone who rejects the hate and terrorism of this Nazi MAGA movement can be.”

The comments follow other since deleted social media posts from the Democratic Party calling for the death penalty for supporters of the 47th POTUS, whom Swift described as a “domestic enemy and domestic terrorist” in a call with Talk Back Radio with Doug Spade and Mike Clement on Saturday. The controller on duty at the time was reportedly “doing a job usually handled by two people.” The New York Times cited, but did not publish, the internal FAA document mentioned in its report.

The FAA did not respond to a request for comment from The National News Desk Thursday seeking confirmation.

WASHINGTON D.C. - President Donald Trump signed an executive order this week to bar “chemical or surgical mutilation” sex-change procedures for minors.

The executive order, titled “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation,” declares that the United States “will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called ‘transition’ of a child from one sex to another,” and defines “child” as anyone under the age of 19.

“Across the country today, medical professionals are maiming and sterilizing a growing number of impressionable children under the radical and false claim that adults can change a child’s sex through a series of irreversible medical interventions. This dangerous trend will be a stain on our Nation’s history, and it must end,” the order states. Click here to read more.

NEW YORK CITY, NY - Taxpayer-funded nonprofit homeless shelters in New York City are filled with nepotism and conflicts of interest, and their executives take home salaries of up to $1 million, according to a report from the city’s Department of Investigation.

Key facts: The report reviewed 51 nonprofit homeless shelters and found issues with every single one of them.

Five of the nonprofits had executives who earned salaries of more than $700,000, and eight others paid more than $500,000.

CORE Services Group, which is “almost entirely funded by the city,” paid its CEO “more than $1 million” in one year, according to the audit. CORE received $467.5 million from the city between 2017 and 2023.

Acacia Network received $1.5 billion from the city from 2017 to 2023, according to checkbook data at OpenTheBooks.com. Click here to read more.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich - The mayor of Michigan’s second-largest city believes “it is a terrible, terrible moment for our country” and promises police “are not in the business of enforcing immigration law.”

Grand Rapids Mayor David LaGrand recently laid out his views on President Donald Trump’s efforts to crack down on criminal illegal migrants, making it clear he’s not a fan of the 47th POTUS.

“We have an obligation to speak out on this issue and speak out on it in moral terms, and to do everything in our power to respect, honor and support the members of our community who have built their lives here,” LaGrand said at Tuesday’s city commission meeting.

“But we also have to not give false hope,” he said. “So the danger of holding out some media term like sanctuary cities is people may think that somehow that gives them protection they don’t have.” Click here to read more.

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Ormond Beach has become the latest city in Central Florida to stop adding fluoride to its drinking water after a vote by the Ormond Beach City Commission Tuesday.

The move follows guidance from Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo, who advised that water fluoridation is no longer necessary and recommended against it, citing concerns over the potential neuropsychiatric risks linked to fluoride exposure.

With the vote, Ormond Beach joins a growing number of communities reconsidering water fluoridation, while still ensuring that residents receive clean, safe, and high-quality water.

The city’s decision also reflects a shift toward giving individuals more control over their personal choices regarding fluoride use.

City staff have already begun the process of discontinuing fluoridation, according to a Facebook post. Despite the change, officials emphasized that water quality standards will remain high, and the move is aimed at giving residents more options in their health decisions. Click here to read more.

NORWICH, Conn. (Gray News) – A man was arrested in Connecticut over the weekend on DUI charges and reckless driving after troopers said they caught him speeding at over 130 mph.

When asked why he was speeding so fast, troopers said the driver, identified as 28-year-old Logan Mirmozaffari, said he wanted to get home to see his cat.

A news release from Connecticut State Police said troopers clocked Mirmozaffari driving over 130 mph on Interstate 395 in Norwich around 12:45 a.m. Sunday.

A trooper caught up with the Kia sedan and pulled the vehicle over. Troopers said Mirmozaffari complied and pulled over on the right shoulder. Click here to read more.
