Americans who shopped at sporting goods stores and bought religious books “like a Bible” were flagged through their banks as potential domestic terrorists, Rep. Jim Jordan revealed Jan. 17.
The federal government reportedly flags terms like "MAGA" and "Trump" in transactions, as revealed by documents obtained by the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government. GOP lawmakers suggest that individuals shopping at certain retailers or buying religious texts like the Bible may also have had their transactions flagged.
Rep. Jim Jordan has requested interviews with FBI Director Christopher A. Wray and Noah Bishoff, a former top director in the Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. The documents indicate that after the Jan. 6 riot, financial institutions were provided with suggested search terms, including generic terms like "TRUMP" and "MAGA," to identify transactions on behalf of federal law enforcement.
This has raised concerns about the scrutiny of private transactions based on political and religious affiliations.
