Whitmer’s Legacy: School bus full of students tries to avoid potholes, ends up in the ditch

A fifth-grader was left with a concussion and others with minor injuries after a Huron Township school bus driver last week attempted to avoid large potholes and careened into the ditch.

Huron Township Police told WXYZ the driver was driving along the right side of Clark Road to avoid the potholes shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Thursday when the road gave out.

Lucas, a fifth-grader, said he had just got on the bus moments before the crash.

“I realized it right here. I was like oh, crap, we’re about to crash,” he said. “Everyone started screaming and I was like seeing random stars and stuff because I hit my head on a bar.”

The incident occurred about a month after both Sumpter and Huron townships declared a public safety emergency over the area’s deteriorating gravel roads and called on Wayne County to step in, WXYZ reports.

“With the ice and the cold weather, it is just so concerning with the buses. There’s been so many incidents,” resident Mayra Villareal said at the time. Click here to read more.

California School Board to Vote on Whether to Pull the Bible

A Southern California school district is holding a public hearing Tuesday night to decide whether to remove the Bible from its library shelves.

A formal complaint filed against the King James Version in the Redlands Unified School District alleges the text contains “inappropriate material for students.” The specific passages cited in the complaint have not been publicly disclosed, according to Mercury News.

The review was triggered by a district policy adopted in August requiring that any book challenged by a complaint be pulled from shelves and evaluated within 45 days. A committee then rates it for sexual content, violent content, and age appropriateness.

In this case, the committee is not recommending removal. Three report cards dated Feb. 24 gave the Bible between 4 and 7 points on a 25-point scale, placing it in the lowest tier and recommending it stay on shelves.

The board is not bound by that recommendation.neutrally so voters can decide for themselves.” Click here to read more.

Erika Kirk Cancels Appearance at Event After Threats on Her Life

Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk has canceled her plans to participate in an event at the University of Georgia Tuesday evening after reportedly receiving a credible threat against her life.

Vice President JD Vance revealed the information while speaking at the event himself.

“First of all, I love Erika,” Vance said. “I know that she did get some threats and about two hours ago, as you know Andrew, I was a little worried that we were going to have to cancel the event because Erika was not going to come and she was very worried about it. I talked to Secret Service, and obviously these guys do a very good job, and I said, `you know what, let’s let Erika do what she needs to do for herself and her family.`”

Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet and Vance continued to participate in the event without incident. Click here to read more.

Meet the California Millionaire Funding Anti-Oil Lawsuits—And the Columbia Academics Working To Influence the Judges Handling The Cases

Lawsuits seeking to hold the nation’s biggest oil companies accountable for global warming and extreme climate events—and academics looking to influence how judges rule on those cases—are bankrolled by a common donor, the real estate developer and environmental activist Dan A. Emmett.

The little-known California millionaire is funding both the law firm filing novel suits against oil companies and Columbia University’s Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, according to emails obtained by the Washington Free Beacon and the tax filings of Emmett’s eponymous foundation.

He is reflective of an emerging trend on the left in which philanthropic donations and nonprofit organizations are used to bankroll lawsuits aimed at quantifying the damage caused by climate change and forcing the nation’s leading oil producers to pay—and, at the same time, producing climate-related academic literature and course material intended to influence the judges overseeing that litigation. Biden admin. weaponized FACE Act against pro-life activists, DOJ alleges in report

WASHINGTON — A new report from the Justice Department alleges that the Biden administration weaponized federal law by selectively prosecuting pro-life activists under the FACE Act.

The new report is based on a review of over 700,000 internal records, claiming that the Biden-era Justice Department coordinated with abortion-rights groups to track activists, seek harsher sentences for pro-life defendants and in some cases, withhold evidence.

The Justice Department's "Weaponization Working Group" said it reviewed internal communications, case files, and prosecutorial decisions tied to enforcement of the FACE Act. A law meant to protect access to abortion clinics and pregnancy resource centers. The report found Biden officials allegedly worked closely with groups like Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation to help compile information on pro-life activists used in investigations and prosecutions. Newly Declassified Docs Reveal Bias of Impeachment ‘Whistleblower’

A former inspector general who fast-tracked a “whistleblower” complaint that led to the first impeachment of President Trump in 2019 knew the whistleblower was a registered Democrat and Joe Biden loyalist yet still determined his complaint was “a matter of urgent concern that appeared credible,” according to newly declassified documents.

The documents also reveal the anonymous whistleblower secretly met with the Democratic staff of former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff prior to submitting his complaint in August 2019.

Yet under direct questioning, the whistleblower – later identified by Real Clear Investigations as intellgience analyst Eric Ciaramella – failed to disclose those contacts in interviews with IG investigators or on whistleblower forms, according to more than 350 pages of intel briefings Schiff classified as secret and locked up in a Capitol vault. Maine Republican Lawmakers Rally Support for Referendum on Girls’ Sports, Criticize Ballot Language Ahead of Hearing

Augusta, Maine – Republican lawmakers gathered to voice support for a citizen-initiated referendum aimed at restricting participation in girls’ sports and access to female-only spaces based on biological sex, while also criticizing the wording of the ballot question introduced by Secretary of State Shenna Bellows (D).

They also urged the public to take part in a hearing on the issue scheduled for tomorrow.

Speaking at the event, Assistant House Republican Leader Katrina Smith said lawmakers assembled to address what she described as a growing concern over protecting girls in Maine.

Smith focused her remarks on the referendum language drafted by the Secretary of State, arguing that the question was not written in a neutral manner.

“The role of Secretary of State is not to advocate for one side of a policy debate,” Smith said. “The role is to ensure elections are conducted fairly and that ballot questions are written clearly and neutrally so voters can decide for themselves.” Click here to read more.

‘DoorDash Grandma’ Tells Trump How Much His Tax Policies Saved Her This Year

When Sharon Simmons delivered McDonald’s to President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on Monday, she shared that his tax policy has saved her about half her income.

Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” passed and signed into law last year, established a tax deduction of up to $25,000 for tips. Simmons, a grandmother of 10 who lives in Arkansas, said half of her income is tips.

“I saved over $11,000 by not having to claim,” Simmons said.

“We call it the Great, Big, Beautiful Bill,” Trump responded. “We should call it the Great Big, Beautiful Tax Cut Bill because it’s tremendous amounts of money.”

Simmons made her first delivery to the White House two days before Tax Day on April 15.

The president gave Simmons a $100 tip, on which she will not have to pay taxes.

“The ‘No Tax on Tips’ is something special,” Trump said. Click here to read more.

San Francisco Reinstates 8th-Grade Algebra After ‘Equity’ Experiment Fails

San Francisco school officials voted Tuesday to restore eighth-grade algebra more than a decade after the district eliminated the course in the name of “equity,” a policy that attracted intense criticism as math scores declined across the district.

The city’s school board approved the measure Tuesday evening by a narrow 4-3 vote.

The move reverses a district policy, implemented in 2014, that removed algebra from middle schools in an attempt to give minority students more time to learn basic math skills. Instead, math proficiency declined across the district—including among black students.

Eighth-grade math proficiency in San Francisco public schools fell from 51 percent in the 2016-17 school year to 40 percent in the 2022-23 school year. Proficiency among black students fell from 11 percent to 4 percent. The policy led some parents to use tutors or enroll their students in summer school, often paying out of pocket, according to the New York Times. Click here to read more.

Minneapolis Might Bring Back Bathhouses As Spaces for Sex and Queer Community

The Minneapolis City Council is considering a proposal to bring back bathhouses where people can have sex. And it’s provoking a wider conversation around stigma, criminalization, and community.

The proposal involves four related measures, introduced on March 26. They include plans to amend regulations for places “where sexual activity between consenting adults may be facilitated” and to update “provisions pertaining to indecent conduct and disorderly houses, adding exceptions for licensed establishments where sexual activity between consenting adults may be facilitated.”

“The council is expected to take up the ordinance discussion again on Thursday,” part KSTP TV, a local ABC affiliate. Click here to read more.

Government-Funded Censor Told State Dept. Its Testing Wouldn’t Focus On U.S. Audiences — It Then Targeted The Blaze

Staff with the Global Engagement Center (“GEC”) told a State Department official that its testbed platform “will NOT focus on US audiences,” but then proceeded to fund a trial targeting The Blaze — a Texas-based media outlet. The Federalist uncovered this detail during discovery in its lawsuit against the State Department and the GEC, which the plaintiffs settled last week after the Defendants agreed to detailed prophylactic measures to prevent similar violations of Americans’ First Amendment rights.

The Federalist, along with The Daily Wire, sued the State Department and GEC in December of 2023, after learning that the defendants had funded the testing, development, and promotion of censorship technologies that demonetized, denigrated, and limited the reach of the media plaintiffs’ speech. The complaint alleged both a First Amendment claim and a claim that the defendants exceeded their statutory authority, which was limited to managing foreign affairs.

Mamdani’s plan for free buses in NYC hits pothole, told by Albany ‘just not financially feasible’

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is not pushing for free buses in the city this year.

Mamdani’s three campaign promises were freeze the rent, universal daycare, and fast, free buses. As city and state budgets are tight, and disagreement among Democrats blocks Mamdani’s plan, he does not appear to be pushing for free buses to be implemented this year, Politico reported.

Mamdani told the news outlet on Tuesday that he is “absolutely committed to making buses fast and free.”

He has touted a universal daycare pilot as a win.

Meanwhile, New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul support an expansion of a discount program for low-income subway and bus riders called Fair Fares.

While Mamdani has supported expanding the program, in 2024, he singled out Fair Fares as a “means-tested program [that] will never reach everyone they’re meant to.” Click here to read more.

USC Bans Men from Parts of Gyms to Make Women, Non-Binary Students Feel Comfortable

A California college has banned men from using certain areas in its gyms to make non-binary students and women more comfortable.

The University of Southern California has adopted a policy suggested by a radical LGBTQ+ activist group to institute the ban, according to the New York Post.

The activist group Student Assembly for Gender Empowerment (SAGE) demanded the new rule for the school’s Lyon Center. SAGE describes itself as a “programming assembly and intersectional feminist organization under the student government, committed to uplifting all voices oppressed by the patriarchy.”

Student Mengze Wu praised the move to ban men from certain workout areas on Mondays and Wednesdays as a way to stop the facility from being too “male-dominated.” Click here to read more.

Suspect attacks, repeatedly stabs Calif. sheriff’s office K-9 after slow pursuit

SOLANO COUNTY, Calif. — A high-risk pursuit along Interstate 80 from Dixon to Fairfield early Tuesday escalated into a violent confrontation that left a Solano County Sheriff’s K-9 seriously wounded and a suspect in custody, authorities said.

According to the Solano County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when deputies spotted a vehicle moving at an unusually slow speed on the freeway in Dixon, which they said was creating a dangerous situation for surrounding drivers during the morning commute. When a K-9 sheriff’s deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver failed to yield, triggering a pursuit that stretched along the busy corridor.

The chase continued until officers, working alongside the California Highway Patrol, brought it to a controlled end. A spike strip was deployed, disabling the vehicle near Interstate 80 and Travis Boulevard in Fairfield. Even after the vehicle came to a stop, though, officials said the situation remained tense and unpredictable. Click here to read more.
