WASHINGTON D.C. - While the investigation remains in its early stages, law enforcement experts told Business Insider the historic shooting will certainly prompt a major review of Secret Service procedure.
Matt Shoemaker, a former intelligence officer at the Defense Intelligence Agency, went as far as calling the shooting a "major failure" of the Secret Service.
"I've been to these sorts of events before, and there are layers upon layers of security," Shoemaker said. "So for the alleged shooter to be on a rooftop, with a clear shot to the podium — it is mind-boggling to say that this was overlooked."
Trump said in a post on Truth Social several hours after the 6:15 p.m. shooting that a bullet hit the upper part of his right ear. In videos of the shooting, the former president could be seen clutching his hand to his bloodied face and later raising his fist triumphantly while being escorted off the stage by the Secret Service. MIAMI, FLA - Melania Trump sent a message to the American people on Sunday in response to the attempted assassination on her husband, former President Donald Trump, during a rally in Pennsylvania the day before. Her statement mentioned their son Barron, the suspected gunman who has been killed by law enforcement, and the families of the other victims — one of whom was killed in the attack. She also thanked law enforcement and talked about the human side of her spouse in a way not often seen publicly from the former first lady.
“I am thinking of you, now, my fellow Americans. We have always been a unique union. America, the fabric of our gentle nation is tattered, but our courage and common sense must ascend and bring us back together as one,” Melania Trump said. “When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life, and Barron’s life, were on the brink of devastating change. I am grateful to the brave secret service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their own lives to protect my husband.” Click here to read more.

CHICAGO, IL - When students return to Chicago Public Schools on Aug. 26, they are likely to see empty desks near them.
More than 3 in 10 seats in CPS schools remained empty during the 2023-2024 school year. In many schools the rate was higher.
Space utilization is measured annually by the district, which reports on school buildings operated by CPS, excluding charter schools operated in their own buildings and alternative schools. An elementary school’s ideal capacity is 77% of its maximum capacity and a high school’s is 80%.
Data shows 58% of schools – or 275 schools – were underutilized in the 2023-2024 school year, 37% were efficient and 5% were overcrowded. Seven of the 25 overcrowded schools are selective enrollment schools which the Chicago Board of Education has resolved to close. Meanwhile, only one “sustainable community school” – the Chicago Teachers Union’s favored but poor-performing school model – is overcrowded. Click here to read more.
