LANSING, Mich - In a new ranking of the “Best & Worst School Systems in 2024,” Michigan is unsurprisingly lumped in with the latter.
An analysis released by the personal finance website WalletHub on Monday examined 32 metrics involving student performance, funding, safety, class sizes, and instructor credentials in all 50 states and the District of Columbia for 2024, ranking each state’s school system from best to worst.
“Getting enough funding is essential for a productive school system, but simply having more money doesn’t guarantee success,” said WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe. “How funds are applies also plays a big role in how good a school system is, as does the quality of educators, other professionals and the curriculum.
“In addition, schools need to focus not just on test scores but also on making sure that students feel safe, comfortable and cared for.” Click here to read more.

LAREDO, Texas — A Chinese man has been indicted for allegedly helping ship more than 4,400 pounds of fentanyl ingredients through the U.S.
Minsu Fang and his associates sent the chemicals from China to drug manufacturing centers in Mexico via the U.S. from August to October, according to federal prosecutors.
He sent them in about 100 shipments, avoiding law enforcement investigations by claiming the boxes were worth less than $800, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas said. Fang also allegedly transported the ingredients with inexpensive items to throw off police.
Each of the shipments passed into the U.S. without any “detailed” inspection before heading toward Mexico, according to the prosecutors. Click here to read more.

NASHVILLE, TN - A judge dismissed three felony charges against an illegal immigrant accused of killing a Nashville restaurant owner in a hit-and-run just months before the fatal incident.
Police say that 29-year-old Ulises Martinez struck 42-year-old Matt Carney in the parking lot of Smokin Thighs, Carney’s popular chicken restaurant and bar, on June 19, before speeding off and leaving the restaurant owner on the road. Carney died from his injuries on July 4.
Martinez was arrested last week and was charged with criminal homicide, tampering with evidence, vehicle theft, criminal impersonation, and evading arrest. A hearing for the charges is scheduled for next month.
On Tuesday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed to The Daily Wire that Martinez is an illegal immigrant from Mexico, saying that he crossed into the United States at “an unknown date and location, without being admitted or paroled by an immigration officer.” Click here to read more.
