LOS ANGELES, CALIF - Google has lost an antitrust lawsuit over its search arrangements on smartphone devices, with a federal judge ruling that the tech giant has illegally held a monopoly in search and text advertising over the past decade.
“After having carefully considered and weighed the witness testimony and evidence, the court reaches the following conclusion: Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta Mehta wrote in Monday’s decision. The tech giant was accused of violating Section 2 of the Sherman Act “by unlawfully maintaining its monopoly in three product markets by entering into exclusive agreements to secure default distribution on nearly all desktop and mobile devices in the United States.” Click here to read more.

DETROIT, Mich - n 2021, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer blamed climate change for Detroit area flooding that closed down highways for days, then spent about $66 million to upgrade highway pumping stations.
Those same highways were under water again on Friday after about 2 to 3 inches of rain fell on the Motor City the day prior.
Several highway ramps for I-94 and I-696 remained closed on Friday, forcing residents to find other routes and resulting in “numerous vehicles stuck in floodwaters and some being towed out,” WJBK reports.
“Off of the freeways, numerous surface streets are also flooded. Areas with high water included 12 Mile and Hoover in Warren, Northwestern Highway at 14 Mile in West Bloomfield, and multiple streets in St. Clair Shores, just to name a few,” according to the television station.

SAN DIEGO, CALIF - Video out of San Diego shows cartels using jet skis to drop off migrants along the beach, with Americans cheering them on.
The video, captured at Sunset Cliffs, includes bystanders saying, “Welcome to the USA” to the migrants.
Witnesses, including cliff divers, reacted with surprise and disbelief as the jet skis left, leaving some visibly exhausted migrants struggling to reach the beach while onlookers cheered and reacted. Local authorities note that such smuggling events, which have been happening for years, concern local communities.
“A lot of them come in nighttime. We have been picking up three or four boats per week that are just abandoned on our beaches. So, we know more are coming,” said San Diego County District 5 Supervisor Jim Desmond. “Unfortunately, I don’t think most Californians realize that this is the case where our law enforcement’s hands are tied.” Click here to read more.

WASHINGTON D.C. - Shoplifting has soared in the U.S. in 2024, forcing many stores to leave cities and continuing a trend in recent years.
Shoplifting has risen 24% in the first half of 2024 alone, according to newly released data from the Council on Criminal Justice.
The White House cited the CCJ’s data to boast a drop in violent crime so far this year, but a closer look at the data showed that while violent crime has declined, shoplifting continues to rise. CCJ studied 23 U.S. cities. Shoplifting has become a major problem in cities around the country, with some store owners announcing they had to close up shop because of the increased theft. Shoplifting and looting during the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots helped spur on a new era of increased shoplifting. Click here to read more.
