LANSING, Mich - MIDLAND, Mich. — The move towards net-zero goals threatens the reliability of the electric grid in the Great Lakes region, according to a new study published by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. Shorting the Great Lakes Grid: How Net Zero Plans Risk Energy Reliability analyzes the electricity plans of seven Great Lakes states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
Policymakers across the country are pushing plans to transition to wind and solar for electricity generation in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions. In the Great Lakes region, 32 of the 38 major investor-owned utilities have pledged to get to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 or sooner. Click here to read more.

WASHINGTON D.C. - On policy, Kamala Harris is starting to put some meat on her campaign’s otherwise bare bones. Her earliest attempt at setting policy involved brazenly appropriating Donald Trump’s plan to eliminate taxes on income derived from tips, which enthused neither progressives nor anyone else who understands how broad-based income tax relief actually works. But the vice president’s first real effort to expound on her own economic thinking is no less vacuous. Ahead of what her campaign is promoting as an economic policy speech on Friday, Harris previewed her plan to reduce consumer prices. CHICAGO, IL - Nearly 100,000 Chicago-area residents are out of work, and at 6.2% the Chicago metro area has the highest unemployment rate of the nation’s 50 largest metro areas. Illinois as a whole isn’t doing much better, with a 6.1% unemployment rate.
Chicago has fewer workers and more unemployed residents than before Mayor Brandon Johnson took office in May 2023. The labor market has gotten so bad in Chicago that the metro area faces the highest unemployment rate of the 50 largest cities in the nation. Click here to read more.

WASHINGTON D.C. - Feds arrested a 50-year-old dual American-Turkish national Aug. 9 on his way to the airport with classified information on his person and in his home, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said Tuesday.
Gokhan Gun, a civilian chemical engineer employed by the Pentagon who was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2021, faces charges of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material, according to the DOJ. Beginning in at least May, Gun printed over a dozen documents marked as classified and removed the papers “from his authorized work location” without permission, the DOJ alleged. WASHINGTON D.C. - Customs and Border Protection officers are being warned to look out for a Palestinian who poses a national security risk at the border.
CBP sources told NewsNation a “be on the lookout” bulletin has been issued for Issa Musa Musa Darfarhat, a Palestinian national who may be attempting to enter the U.S.
Agents are being told to exercise extreme caution and immediately secure Darfarhat if they encounter him. The BOLO shows several variations in his appearance, and agents are told to have Darfarhat take all items out of his pocket, including trash, and contact the tactical terrorist response team.
Sources confirmed Darfarhat is from the West Bank and is a positive match for the terrorist screening database. Agents are currently keeping a close eye on the El Paso Sector, specifically an area near Santa Theresa, New Mexico. Click here to read more.
