LANSING, Mich - After February 2025, every Michigan business must provide paid sick leave to employees — even teenagers who work a few shifts a week while taking classes.

Michigan small businesses are preparing for a minimum wage hike and a mandate to provide sick leave. The wide-ranging mandate applies to part-time, temporary and seasonal workers. Workers who are subject to overtime rules are included, as well as those who are exempt from them.

Many teenage workers will take advantage of the sick leave rule, Midland restaurant owner Tina Anganis told Michigan Capitol Confidential in a phone interview.

“Someone doesn’t have to show up to work for three consecutive days and you can’t fire them; they don’t have to call in,” said Anganis, who owns a Ya Ya’s chicken restaurant. “It’s setting a bad precedent for what kind of morals we want to set in the workplace.” Click here to read more.

COLUMBIA, SC - The University of South Carolina required students to affirm the value of "diversity and inclusion" as part of a mandatory training this summer, underscoring the tenacity of diversity programs in the face of public blowback and raising concerns about compelled speech at a school that has marketed itself as a bastion of free expression.

The right answer was that "diversity and inclusion exposes students to people from different backgrounds, thus enriching the overall campus experience." Click here to read more.

In December, Drew, a 36-year-old man from San Antonio, Texas, drove more than 250 miles (400 km) to Mexico to buy cheap Ozempic to help him lose weight. Going home, he checked the pens. They looked unusual, so he shared photos on social media. The verdict: They were fakes.

Three people on Reddit said Drew's product looked like insulin. "If so, it would be dangerous to use," said one. A surge of insulin can cause a sharp drop in blood sugar that can lead to dizziness, seizures and death.

The incident sheds light on a wider problem in the manufacturing of highly sought-after drugs, one that lets criminal organizations circulate potentially lethal fakes: forged drug batch numbers. Click here to read more.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ala. - An undocumented immigrant from Guatemala now living in Russellville, Alabama, is pleading guilty to stealing a U.S. citizen’s ID and using it to get a passport and vote in the 2016 and 2020 elections.

Angelica Maria Francisco, 42, has been living in Russellville, but federal prosecutors say she used the stolen ID to get a passport in 2011 and used that to travel back and forth to her native country, as well as vote in the primary and general elections of 2016 and 2020.

Francisco is pleading guilty to nine charges, including aggravated identity theft and false claims of citizenship connected to voting. Click here to read more.

WINDER, Ga — The FBI's threat operation center received anonymous tips about the Georgia high school shooter in the past.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey said the tips were over online threats to commit school shootings at an undetermined location and time. Those threats were reportedly made on a Discord account.

"The FBI referred this information to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office for action," saidHosey at a news conferenceat the school Wednesday night. "TheJackson County Sheriff's Office identified and located Gray, who is our suspect in this case, they conducted and investigation at that time and there was no probable cause for arrest or to take any additional law enforcement action.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now working with the FBI to pursue a further investigation into the 14-year-old's past after four people were killed and nine others were wounded atApalachee High School, according to Hosey. Click here to read more.

Michigan House Bill 5711, which would roll back the state’s clean energy mandates for utilities, has cleared the House Energy Committee and is headed to the full House for a vote. If approved there, it would move to the Senate for consideration.

🚨The Village of Birch Run, Michigan doesn’t record or live stream their public meetings. They’re not legally required to, but I think it would be something good to do for transparency. I talked to the village president who did not want to touch the issue.
