Michigan Bill Proposes Comprehensive Overhaul of School Sex Education, Raises Debates on Gender Issues, Contraceptives, and Pregnancy Discussions

LANSING, Mich — A new legislative proposal in Michigan is stirring considerable discussion as it seeks to modernize the sex education curriculum in public schools, introducing broader content on gender identity, contraceptive availability, and detailed pregnancy options.

House Democrats have put forward a bill aimed at amending sections of the 1976 Revised School Code, which would expand the scope of sex education to encompass a "broad range of topics" and update how pregnancy and reproductive health are taught. This proposed shift includes revising the curriculum to acknowledge and affirm different sexual orientations and gender identities, a change advocates say is necessary for inclusivity but which has faced criticism from some parent groups and conservative voices who argue it undermines traditional family values.

Under the new bill, instruction would need to be trauma-informed, medically accurate, and developmentally appropriate, with mandates for the inclusion of lessons on body autonomy, healthy relationships, and consent. Critics have highlighted the bill’s emphasis on topics such as sexual identity and decision-making as areas that could conflict with parents' rights to guide their children's understanding of these subjects according to their personal beliefs.

One of the more debated points in the bill is the repeal of a ban on distributing condoms and other contraceptive devices on school property. The current restrictions that prevent the distribution of family planning drugs or devices would be lifted, allowing schools to provide these resources as part of comprehensive health education. Proponents argue that this change is a necessary step to support safe sexual practices and reduce unplanned pregnancies among teens. However, opponents worry that making contraceptives available in schools could send the wrong message about sexual activity to young students.

In addition to teaching about contraception, the proposed curriculum would provide nonbiased information on all legally available pregnancy outcomes, including details on prenatal care and parenting responsibilities. This aspect of the bill is intended to ensure students are informed about their options, but it also introduces complex discussions about reproductive rights that have historically been contentious in public education.

State Rep. Rachel Hood, a Democrat from Grand Rapids and the bill's sponsor, emphasized that the goal is to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed choices. “This approach ensures young people understand bodily autonomy, recognize boundaries, and build a culture of respect and awareness in their communities,” Hood stated.

Conservative groups have voiced concerns that these changes represent a significant departure from past policies that prioritized abstinence and restricted discussions about contraception and reproductive options. Critics argue that the new approach could conflict with values taught at home and shift the focus away from abstinence, which remains the only 100% effective method of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

As the bill moves forward, public hearings and debates are expected to engage parents, educators, and policy advocates, ensuring that a wide range of opinions are heard on how Michigan schools should approach sex education in the years to come.

Marshall’s economic development agency touts job growth, but numbers show a decline

The Marshall Area Economic Development Alliance touts an increase in jobs and revitalization since Ford’s Blue Oval plant was built in the city using taxpayer dollars, but the numbers do not align with the claim.

The area has lost jobs since it landed the big manufacturer with hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars, according to James Hohman, fiscal policy director at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

Hohman cautioned against focusing on a single number.

“All industries are connected and some have wider effects than others and that’s why it’s important to look at the data and the broader trends,” Hohman said.

Employment in Calhoun County is down by 2,895 people since Ford’s announcement in July 2023, a 4.8% decline, Hohman told Michigan Capital Confidential in an email. Click here to read more.

Prediction markets win big on election night

Prediction markets emerged as big winners of the midterms. Kalshi and Polymarket correctly called the Democratic sweep of Congress by wider margins than most polling models, as well as key battleground races, though they missed surprises like Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s loss and Democratic Senate victories in Iowa and South Carolina.

Trading volume on down-ballot elections grew nearly fivefold from the 2024 cycle to this year’s midterms to $1.8 billion, according to a Semafor analysis of the sites’ public data feeds. Sports and crypto bets still dwarf election contracts across both platforms, and the 2026 midterms attracted less trading interest than the presidential race. Click here to read more.

Initiative banning boys from girls’ sports passes in Washington

.SEATTLE — Washington voters have approved Initiative 638, a measure that would require students to undergo a physical exam documenting sex assigned at birth before participating in interscholastic sports.

The Associated Press called the race Thursday morning, with 56.6% of voters (1,252,863) voting “yes” on the ban and 43.4% (961,810) voting “no.”

The initiative prohibits biological males from competing in school sports reserved for females. It requires students to provide a signed statement from a healthcare provider verifying their biological sex based on reproductive anatomy, genetic makeup, or natural testosterone levels. Nancy Pelosi’s Hand-Picked Successor Loses To Dem Who Wanted To Protect Sex Offenders

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) attempted to hand-pick her successor on her way out of Congress, but San Francisco voters rejected her candidate in favor of a state senator who fought a blanket ban on registered sex offenders holding office.

Connie Chan, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, conceded the election to state Senator Scott Wiener (D-CA) on Wednesday with ballots still being counted.

“After reviewing the results and the ballots remaining to be counted, while we expect the margin to narrow significantly, we do not have a clear path to victory. I congratulate Scott Wiener on his election and wish him success in serving San Francisco,” Chan said in a statement. At the time of her concession, Wiener was leading by about 11 points. The Ghost in the Voter Rolls

t is a mistake to try to solve our election integrity crisis by focusing on individual elections. The real issue isn’t whether fraud flipped any particular race. It’s that voter-registration systems contain structural failures so severe—mass cloning, covert algorithmic tagging, irreconcilable records—that we can no longer know how many unique, eligible people voted in the first place. Both “fraud occurred” and “the election was clean” become unverifiable. Unverifiable elections should be uncertifiable.

American elections rely on voter registration lists, called “voter rolls,” as the basis for voting. Voter rolls are supposed to contain a list of every qualified voter and their voting history. A qualified voter is any person who meets the legal requirements for voting: a U.S. citizen, over 18 years of age, resident at the given address for at least 60 days, with no restrictions on their civil rights. Ballot Scanners Fail In Crucial House Race, Votes Forced Into Orange Bags

Republican incumbent Mike Lawler of New York’s 17th Congressional District is urging voters to stay in line as countywide ballot issues are preventing votes from being processed.

“The Westchester County Board of Elections (BOE) is aware of an issue involving paper ballots that is preventing voting machines from accepting ballots at polling locations throughout the County. The Westchester Board of Elections wants to reassure every voter that your vote matters, your ballot will be secure and your vote will be counted,” the Westchester County Board of Elections, whose county makes up a large part of Lawler’s district, announced.

Congressman Lawler has played a vital role in maintaining the thin Republican majority in the House of Representatives, and many polls have placed his election as a toss-up. Click here to read more.

‘We forgot what it’s like to be populist’: Republicans see Trump’s 2024 crumbling

Republicans’ 2024 coalition is cracking in real time.

President Donald Trump roared back into office two years ago after making major gains with young voters and Americans of color. Now those key groups appear to be moving away from him amid an unpopular Iran war and his lagging approval ratings, according to new results from the POLITICO Poll conducted by PF Global.

Roughly 9% of Trump 2024 voters plan to cast their ballot for a Democrat this year, compared with just over 2% of former Vice President Kamala Harris’ voters who now plan to back Republicans. Click here to read more.

Sophie Cunningham Hires 24/7 Security After Stalker Reveal

Sophie Cunningham’s persona grew exponentially this year. While her play on the floor has been solid, the former Fever guard gained national headlines and near-instant recognizability for her words and actions off the court.

On Monday’s edition of her No Hesitations podcast, Cunningham revealed that her growing fame has prompted her to take more precautions, such as hiring a professional guard.

“I will say… definitely in certain places people kind of knew who I was and I couldn’t really go anywhere,” Cunningham said. “Now it doesn’t matter what state, what city, it’s everywhere.

“And so I’ve hired security, and they’re going to start traveling with me actually next week, 24/7. So that’s a little different. It kind of stops you from your regular routine.” Click here to read more.
