LANSING, Mich - Five years after the COVID-19 pandemic, the voicemail of one Michigan agency says that employees are working remotely to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Since 2020, more than 20,000 government workers have started working remotely instead of showing up to offices in Lansing.

The voicemail of the Michigan Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules says, “To lessen the spread of COVID-19, we are currently working remotely,” Detroit News reporter Beth LeBlanc wrote in a Feb. 21 social media post.

The agency conducts administrative hearings and helps promulgate rules.

Neither the agency’s media line nor the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity responded to a request for comment about the voicemail.

A Michigan Capitol Confidential reporter visited the Lansing office on Feb. 24 and was not allowed beyond a security checkpoint. A security manager said the reporter could only enter the building’s work areas with an escort. The building is open only for hearings, the manager said. Click here to read more.

The letter claims "CNN purchased the only known copy of the Hotel's surveillance footage, uploaded that footage into a free editing software, altered the video and then destroyed the original footage, even though it knew about and repeatedly reported about the federal investigation." DENVER, COL - As a nurse in rural Colorado after World War II, Loretta Ford described herself as a lone ranger. “Whatever went on in health, I was called,” she said. “I took care of it.”

Ms. Ford, who died in January at the age of 104, co-found America’s first nurse practitioner program. She believed that nurses were more than doctors’ helpers: They were decision-makers capable of treating patients.

In one speech, she recounted how physicians had rigid ideas about the line between nursing and medicine—that it was okay for a nurse to use a stethoscope while taking blood pressure, “but if she moved that stethoscope eight inches, oh, that was medicine.” “I used that stethoscope in lots of places at 3 a.m. I could never figure out who they thought was making all these decisions.”

Today, there are almost 400,000 nurse practitioners in the United States. Thanks to Loretta Ford’s pioneering program, nurse practitioners in many states now diagnose and treat patients independently without physician supervision. Not in California, however. Until 2020, nurse practitioners couldn’t practice in California unless they were operating under a collaboration or supervision agreement with a physician. Although this might sound reasonable, in practice, the arrangement is a lucrative handout to physicians: They get to cash checks and restrict competition. FALKVILLE, Ala. - A Falkville High School student just received a life-changing gift from her teacher!

Chelsey Bowers, who is completely blind, just received a pair of special AI-powered glasses.

The Ray-Ban Meta glasses are already helping Bowers in her day-to-day life.

The glasses have a camera that can take pictures of Chelsey Bowers' surroundings.

After taking the picture, the glasses read and describe what’s going on to her.

Bowers will be graduating from Falkville High School in May.

Her teacher since ninth grade, Leslie Freeman, wanted to make sure she had all the tools she needed before she moved onto the next stage of her life.

LANSING, Mich - Gov. Gretchen Whitmer admitted in her State of the State address in February that Michigan spends more on schools than most states, on per pupil basis, but gets worse results.

“I get that this is a national trend, but we invest more per pupil than most states and achieve bottom ten results,” said Whitmer in a clip from her address posted by Dave Bondy on Feb. 27.

“We spend more, and we get less,” Whitmer said. “It’s not acceptable. For our kids, let’s do better. Let’s face our literacy crisis with fierce urgency.”

In her speech, Whitmer said that just 24% of 4th graders can read proficiently and that 24% of 8th graders are proficient in math.

Democratic lawmakers intend to increase spending on education, according to the website of Senate Democrats.

“Senate Democrats are building up Michigan’s future by making significant investments in kids and families, from maternal and infant health and child care to innovative and equitable funding for students, schools, and teachers,” the plan says. Click here to read more.

 

WASHINGTON D.C. - Days after the inauguration of President Donald Trump, a group of former Joe Biden and Kamala Harris staffers came together to launch an effort to arouse the public against the GOP’s looming push to cut taxes on the wealthy. Dubbed “Families Over Billionaires,” the project quickly assembled an eight-figure war chest.

“The campaign will elevate the voices of the majority of Americans who oppose more tax breaks for the rich,” the group says in its mission statement. Mia Ehrenberg, the spokeswoman for Families Over Billionaires—and an ex-Harris campaign aide—told The Free Press that the organization is teaming with “grassroots organizers” to get its message out.

In fact, like a surprising number of Trump 2.0 resistance pop-up groups, Families Over Billionaires owes its existence not to small-dollar donations from ordinary Americans, or to grassroots organizers, but to a single entity: the consulting firm Arabella Advisors, which oversees a massive “dark money” network bankrolled by the super-rich and aligned with the Democratic Party. ANAHEIM, Calif. – A couple at Disneyland allegedly left their child unattended in a stroller so they could go on a ride.

Another guest at the park caught the Feb. 18 incident on camera and posted it to TikTok.

The video shows a stroller covered with a Spider-Man blanket. The woman who posted the video said the parents left the child to ride Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!

“I’ve honestly never seen this happen,” the woman said in the video. “Why did somebody leave their baby here in a stroller while they went to go get on a ride?”

Another user left a comment on the video, pointing out that “Guardians is usually like a 60 to 80 minute wait also. So they were planning on leaving that baby for at least over an hour.”

The video later shows a security guard checking on the child, and the woman who posted the video said that security got the parents off the ride.

The parents were not named, and it’s unclear if they faced any consequences from Disneyland or are facing any criminal charges.

WASHINGTON D.C. - Egg prices in the U.S. have dipped since the Trump administration unveiled a plan to combat bird flu and reduce costs, according to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Tuesday.

“A good piece of news that we just got in the last day or two is that the average cost of a dozen eggs has now gone down $1.85 since we announced our plan about a week-and-a-half ago,” Rollins told reporters outside the White House.

Despite this recent dip, Rollins acknowledged that prices could rise again due to high demand during the Easter season.

The White House on Tuesday celebrated the good news but acknowledged that combating costs is a long-term effort. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the agriculture secretary was being “honest and realistic with the American people” regarding egg prices.

ANN ARBOR, MICH - Washtenaw County’s new pansexual sheriff is “holding strong” against President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts, likening immigration status to paying taxes.

Sheriff Alyshia Dyer on Monday laid out her department’s “very strict immigration policy” during a virtual town hall hosted by state Rep. Jimmie Wilson, D-Ypsilanti, making it crystal clear she’s doing all she can to thwart the 47^th POTUS.

“We have a very strict policy involving immigration that we’re not working with them, we’re not assisting them,” said Dyer, who was elected as the county’s first self-declared pansexual sheriff in November. WASHINGTON D.C. - The Environmental Protection Agency canceled two $20 million environmental justice grants that the Biden administration awarded to its own advisers, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

On Monday, EPA administrator Lee Zeldin announced the agency's latest round of grant cancellations and cost-cutting measures. Included among the more than 400 canceled grants are 2 that the Biden administration awarded in December to Tennessee-based nonprofit Young, Gifted & Green and North Carolina-based nonprofit Democracy Green, a source familiar told the Free Beacon. Both groups had connections to the Biden White House and EPA—and neither had handled such a substantial amount of money before securing the taxpayer funds.

Young, Gifted & Green received its $20 million environmental justice grant after its CEO—LaTricea Adams—personally applied for the funding while simultaneously serving as a member of a top White House environmental justice council, the Free Beacon reported last month. The group has reported just $2.7 million in revenue—about 14 percent the size of the grant—since it registered as a nonprofit in 2020, tax filings show. Click here to read more.

The stock market has been in a bit of a freefall over the course of the last couple of weeks, and I have been predicting this for a while.

It turns out that when you mess with the market mechanisms, people don’t like it. Investors tend to take the money out of the market and wait for things to be a little calmer, a little steadier. If you think of the free markets essentially as an ocean, sometimes it’s pretty choppy out there. Right now, it’s choppy.

If this administration is blamed for the choppy waters, that will be quite bad — not just for this administration, but also for everything it represents in the public mind.

HENRICO, Va. - A registered nurse in Virginia who was arrested after several NICU babies were found with mysterious injuries is facing more charges, according to authorities.

Erin Strotman was initially charged with malicious wounding, child abuse, and neglect causing serious injury after an incident showing her mishandling a NICU baby on hospital surveillance video in November 2024.

However, on March 10, Strotman was charged with two more counts of malicious wounding and four other counts of child abuse and neglect.

“Not just video but also other evidence,” Taylor said. “Without going into details of this case, however, one of the things we can look at is to see if there is a pattern of behavior.”

A bond status hearing was held Monday to determine that these new charges do not impact her current bond.

These six new charges include two new babies who were allegedly harmed by Strotman, meaning she is now charged with abusing three of the seven injured children who are being investigated. Click here to read more.

 

LANSING, Mich - While homeowners in Michigan’s largest city are free to raise chickens, ducks and honeybees on their land, residents of the far-less populated Midland Township in the Mid-Michigan area face a legal ban.

Some township residents want to change that, and they say township officials stand in the way.

Residents of Detroit are free to raise up to eight chickens, or ducks, or a combination of the two, as of Jan. 31, thanks to a Detroit City Council 5-3 vote taken Nov. 12, 2024. James Tate, council pro tem, sponsored the legislation that lets residents have honeybees on site. Residents must pay an annual permit fee of $50 and comply with various regulations.

Midland Township, by contrast, forbids many residents to raise chickens on their land. The ban applies to anyone whose plot is less than five acres. Several residents used a Feb. 12 township board meeting to ask trustees to reverse the ban. Click here to read more.

 

CHICAGO, IL - The parental right “to direct the upbringing and education of children under their control” was recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court 100 years ago.

But Illinois lawmakers are considering a bill attacking that right. If passed, the bill would require private schools to report the personal information of all enrolled students and their parents to state and local authorities.

House Bill 2827 was filed by state Rep. Terra Costa Howard, D-Lombard, and has been co-sponsored by 15 other Democratic members of the House as of March 5. Teachers unions – ardent opponents of parents’ ability to choose alternatives to public school – have invested over $3 million in the 16 sponsors’ campaign committees, according to records with the Illinois State Board of Elections.

Restricting parents’ rights and limiting educational choice is nothing new in Illinois. Despite voter support for Illinois’ private school choice program, Illinois lawmakers listened to teachers unions and ended the Invest in Kids tax-credit scholarship program in 2023, taking away scholarships from more than 15,000 low-income students benefiting from the privately-funded program. Lawmakers let the program expire after teachers unions dropped nearly $1.5 million into their campaign coffers in the months ahead of the decision. Click here to read more.
