SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Memorial Day is approaching and amid the holiday sales and long weekend, local veterans hope people remember the real meaning behind Memorial Day.
Dale Hill, the former commander of the American Legion Sioux Falls SD Post 15, said the day is meant to honor and remember military members who died in battle.
“It is not for us living, it is for those that are not with us anymore,” Hill said. “It is one of the things that we celebrate in their remembrance every year, and that’s the whole point of Memorial Day is to remember those that have fallen.”
People can often get confused between the days honoring military personnel, Hill said.
Memorial Day is for military members who died in battle and did not return home. Veteran’s Day, marked in November, honors people who have completed their military service. Armed Forces Day is for active duty members. Click here to read more.
A 14-year-old girl dove into the frigid Delaware River in suburban Philadelphia and saved a nine-year-old boy from drowning this holiday weekend, police say.
Nylah Bennett was at a basketball court near the Burlington Public Boat Ramp on Friday afternoon when she heard the boy’s distant cries for help.
She ran to the river to discover the boy had fallen into the water and was struggling to survive, Fox 29 reported.
“The boy had slipped off at the end of the ramp and all I could see was his hands out of the water,” the teen told Philly’s ABC affiliate. “That’s when I knew he was drowning. I don’t know what was going through my head I just jumped in the water.”
Bennett went in fully clothed and grabbed the boy until a passing boater pulled them both to safety.
Both were at risk for hypothermia as the river was reported to be at only 57 degrees this weekend. There was also a river current of two miles per hour.

MISSION, Texas – A doctor in Texas has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after he was convicted of falsely diagnosing patients with diseases they did not have in order to fund his lavish lifestyle.
According to the Department of Justice Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada, M.D., was convicted of one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud, seven counts of health care fraud, and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice.
He was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison and three years of supervised release.
In addition to his prison term, Zamora-Quezada was ordered to forfeit over $28 million, including 13 real estate properties, a private jet and a Maserati GranTurismo.
Zamora-Quezada ran a health care fraud scheme involving over $118 million in false claims and the payment of over $28 million by insurers as a result of him falsely diagnosing patients with chronic illnesses to bill for tests and treatments that the patients did not need. Click here to read more.

According to a report from Fox News, a 71-year-old retired special constable from Kent, England, sued the Kent Police (who he’d served for more than a decade) over his wrongful arrest in November 2023.
Julian Foulkes was detained by Kent Police after he witnessed an antisemitic mob taking over an airport in Russia and posted on X, “One step away from storming Heathrow looking for Jewish arrivals … “
This jab at antisemites prompted the police to show up at his house and conduct a search. They rifled through his belongings, in particular his books and magazines, which included a book by conservative author Douglas Murray and Spectator Magazine. Click here to read more.
LARGO, FLA - The former owner of a small, multi-unit rental property filed a federal lawsuit today challenging the steep fines Largo levied against him that ultimately cost him his property and most of his life savings. Recent reporting from the Miami Herald shows that Florida cities may be using similar fines to foreclose on properties and pad their budgets.
Don Bourgeois’s lawsuit claims City of Largo officials violated the federal Constitution’s prohibition on excessive fines when he was hit with $250 daily accruing fines—eventually totaling almost $600,000—for minor code violations.
In addition to the excessive fines, Bourgeois is also suing over the unreasonable deadline that Floridians have to challenge such penalties—just 30 days from the order imposing the daily fines. In other words, under Florida’s laws, Bourgeois could only challenge the excessiveness of the nearly $600,000 fine when the total fine was still only $7,500. Click here to read more.
