Gov. Whitmer donor gets $10M while hungry Michiganders get food benefits stolen

Two Michigan women each received money from state taxpayers. But their similarities ended there.

While Michigan resident Kaiysha Warner slept, a criminal stole $762 of her food stamp benefits, from more than 680 miles away in Massachusetts. She found out through a notice that appeared on her phone, which revealed a transaction she had no part of.

Michigan won’t reimburse those stolen benefits, offered through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, leaving her and her family hungry.

About 1.4 million Michiganders with low incomes spend public money using Bridge Cards at grocery stores, farmers markets and gas stations. The card-swipe technology on a standard Bridge card is vulnerable to data theft by criminals who can install skimmers on the card readers that process electronic payment cards. The dollar amount of reported food stamp fraud increased from fiscal year 2023 to 2024 by 387%, according to documents Michigan Capitol Confidential obtained through a records request. Selling every NBA team wouldn’t be enough to fill Illinois’ pension hole

Illinois’ public pension crisis is the worst in the nation and shows no sign of improving anytime soon.

A new report from the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability confirms that despite better than expected investment returns, the state’s unfunded pension liabilities rose another $1.5 billion in fiscal year 2024 to $143 Billion. This marks the third consecutive year of rising pension debt, but is part of a much longer trend that threatens taxpayers, retirees and state services.

The funding ratio – the measure of assets on hand to pay future obligations – ticked up slightly from 44.6% to 46.1%. However, until structural reform is enacted to lower the unfunded liabilities, this minor improvement in the funding ratio won’t offer real relief to the taxpayers trying to keep these pensions afloat. These remain some of the worst-funded pension systems in the nation. Click here to read more.

New animated movie aims to bring story of Jesus to life through eyes of John the disciple

A new 2D-animated movie, told through the eyes of Jesus’ beloved disciple John, will be released in theaters on Sept. 5, taking viewers from the beginning of Jesus’ ministry to his passion, death, and resurrection. “Light of the World” is the first movie from the Salvation Poem Project, a nonprofit ministry and independent studio that crafts stories to share Jesus Christ with the world.

Brennan McPherson, producer of the film, told CNA in an interview that his team chose to tell the story from John’s perspective because he was likely the youngest disciple so they believe his perspective is the most relatable.

“Telling it from the perspective of a young teenager — young kids want to age up and they see themselves in that. Teenagers are going through those formative years, so they relate with it. And then adults know what that formative time in their life was like. So it made it more appealing to a full family,” he explained.

He added that the filmmakers “wanted to show how the Gospel changed a young boy’s life and how it can still change our lives today.” Click here to read more.

Feds Threaten to Pull Millions Unless Michigan Strips “Gender Ideology” from Sex Ed

WASHINGTON, DC – The Trump administration is putting Michigan on notice: remove all references to “gender ideology” from federally funded sex education or risk losing millions in federal grants.

In an August 26 letter to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) ordered the state to rewrite its Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) curriculum within 60 days. Michigan receives roughly $3.4 million annually in federal funding for the program, which serves students ages 12 to 18.

The letter flagged lessons that define gender as separate from biological sex, encourage students to share pronouns, and promote inclusivity for transgender and nonbinary youth. Federal officials said this content violates PREP’s statutory mission, which is to teach abstinence, contraception, and life skills – not gender identity concepts. Click here to read more.

President Trump demands COVID vaccine data following chaos at CDC

WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump is now re-litigating the record and response to one of the deadliest pandemics in history.

\On one hand, he praises his own effort to help create vaccines at a rapid rate, known as Operation Warp Speed, but also questions the outcome.

In a post on Truth Social, he called on drug companies to justify the success of their COVID-19 drugs, the debate over which, he says, is causing the CDC to be torn apart. Adding that he wants the answer and he wants it now, as his Secretary vows more changes.

During a news conference in Texas on Thursday, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said.

The CDC is an agency that is very troubled for a very long time. And anybody who lived through the Covid pandemic and saw all of these bizarre recommendations that were not science-based, all the misinformation...understands that.

Secretary Kennedy also defended the firing of the CDC Director over vaccine policy, prompting the resignation of several others. Click here to read more.

Prop 2 could face same constitutional problem that sank 2016 ballot-speech law

When the Michigan government tried in 2016 to restrict what school districts could say about local ballot questions, a federal district court granted a preliminary injunction that described the idea as “unconstitutionally vague.”

If voters pass Prop 2 on Nov. 3, the ballot proposal could face the same fate because of vague, undefined rules.

The vagueness doctrine requires that laws be written clearly so ordinary people can understand what they mean, as a shield against arbitrary or discriminatory enforcement. The doctrine is derived from the due process clause of the Fifth and 14th amendments, according to Cornell Law School. Click here to read more.

Michigan woman with no internet credited with MORE ActBlue donations — including 65 in one day!

An 88-year-old Michigan woman previously linked to thousands of questionable ActBlue donations was credited with hundreds of additional contributions, including four recorded on a day when she demonstrably had no internet access.

Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Charlie LeDuff reported Wednesday that federal campaign finance records attributed another 562 transactions totaling nearly $4,500 to Elizabeth Waffle over six weeks.

Four of those transactions, totaling $22, were recorded on the day LeDuff first visited Waffle at her rural Michigan trailer, where she had no electricity, running water or internet access.

During the initial visit, LeDuff and Waffle attempted to make an online donation but could not connect to the internet, according to their follow-up interview. Click here to read more.

‘His wheels weren’t hot enough’: California police bust $54,000 Hot Wheels thief

COLTON, Calif. — Colton police arrested a man Thursday suspected of stealing $54,000 worth of Hot Wheels cars from a freight train, according to authorities.

The Colton Police Department responded about 3 a.m. to reports of a train burglary near Mason Street, according to video posted on the Police Department’s Facebook page.

“Yeah, they’re robbing the trains down here at the end of Maple Street,” an unknown caller reported to the police in the video.

An officer was near the intersection of 7th Street and La Cadena Drive and then followed a man in a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, according to the video. The officer then pulled the driver over and took him into custody.

The man was booked into the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen property and grand theft, according to the Police Department post. Click here to read more.

Deleting Evidence? Ilhan Omar Scrubs Post That Links Marriage To Her Immediate Family

Embattled Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar scrubbed a post from her social media that identifies her father, a key piece of evidence tpwards the claim that she married her brother.

Omar deleted a 2013 post that said, “Happy Father’s Day to my aabo Nur Said, I am forever grateful to Allah for giving me the best father,” according to the New York Post. “Aabo” is the word for father in Somali, Omar’s native language.

The post shows that her father’s name closely matches the name of her ex-husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who is alleged to be related to Omar. Federal investigators say that Omar’s real name is, in fact, Ilhan Nur Said Elmi. Click here to rea

Who Is Lady Budgetdown? The Mystery Account Raising Eyebrows and Uncovering School Finances
The anonymous figure behind a growing school transparency website says the project is run by one person, has faced threats of legal action and is expanding its reach across Michigan.

MICHIGAN — Who is Lady Budgetdown?

It’s a question that has circulated among Michigan educators, school administrators, taxpayers and social media users as a mysterious online watchdog continues digging into school district finances, superintendent salaries, bond proposals and public spending.

Now, the person behind the increasingly visible project is revealing new details about its origins, operations and future — while refusing to disclose their identity.

In an exclusive written interview, Lady Budgetdown confirmed the operation is run by a single individual, not a larger organization or political group.

“It started with just me, and it currently is only me,” Lady Budgetdown said.

The anonymous researcher said the project receives technical assistance with website development but independently oversees the research, reviews public records, creates content and determines what information gets published.

Michigan school funding tops inflation since before the pandemic

Funding for public schools in Michigan has grown faster than inflation since before the pandemic.

Yet some school teachers, like Amanda Walker of Bay City Schools, have said that schools are being defunded. Walker is vice president of her district’s chapter of the Michigan Education Association.

“I do think there’s been a concerted effort to dismantle public education by defunding, by diverting funds to private schools, by tearing down teachers and accusing them of all sorts of nonsense. People see it, and they feel it, and they don’t like it,” Walker told an MEA news publication recently.

It can feel that way at school districts such as Bay City, where the student count dropped 16% between 2018-19 and 2025-26, according to MiSchoolData.org. Fewer students means less in per-pupil funding. Click here to read more.

Data centers become midterm minefield as candidates scramble to answer voter backlash

President Donald Trump has made no secret of his support for building new data centers across the country, but candidates in both parties are trying to show voters they are listening to growing concerns about the technology. With the midterms two weeks away, the issue could help decide who voters ultimately choose.

The debate is playing out in city halls nationwide. In Memphis, Tennessee, the city council voted down a proposal Tuesday that would have halted new data center development for a year, following a heated meeting. “We demand a healthy environment, clean air, clean water, which we have a human right to. We also demand representation that chooses us, the people, over the profits of a billionaire’s experiment,” said KeShaun Pearson, who attended the meeting. Click here to read more.

Consumers Energy’s rate hike request comes days after $139M increase approved

Consumers Energy is looking for a rate hike on natural gas prices less than a week after the public service commission approved a $139 million increase.

The utility provider filed its notice of intent with regulators on Monday, which is required before it can submit its rate request.

The previous rate hike came out to about a 4.3% bump in monthly payments for natural gas.

Big picture view:

Consumers Energy has not said how much more it is asking for it its latest failing, but did say the new rate would last 12 months, ending Oct. 31, 2028.

Utility companies cannot set rates themselves. Instead, they submit a request to increase rates for either natural gas or electricity with the Michigan Public Service Commission.

After making the request, both parties and any other stakeholders weigh in on the case.

The Michigan Attorney General frequently intervenes in these cases. Click here to read more.

Trump and Vance announce $25M whistleblower program to encourage public to report alleged fraud

President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday announced a $25 million program to encourage the public to blow the whistle on suspected fraud in the U.S. government as they ramp up efforts to end the abuse of federal programs and dollars.

The White House said that under the Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program, anyone who submits a tip that leads to a fraud conviction or a significant federal enforcement action is eligible to receive up to $30,000, and that the Justice Department will administer the program.

During the announcement, Trump said payments will amount to a 1% commission on the amount of fraud the tip helps uncover. Trump also said he will decide who gets reward money in cases where more than one person claims to have provided the tip.

“I will be the arbitrator of all of these decisions,” Trump in the Oval Office with Vance and other administration officials standing behind him. “It’ll be a binding arbitration.”

Trump said journalists could participate in the program. Click here to read more.
