Grand Rapids climate plan sparks tax, business fears

A global warming plan in the city of Grand Rapids will raise taxes on residents and drive business out of the city, landlords and property owners said in feedback to the city, according to records Michigan Capitol Confidential obtained.

The climate plan uses the amount of greenhouse gas emitted by municipal operations in 2008 as its benchmark, setting a goal for Michigan’s second-largest city to reduce its emissions 85% by 2030 and 100% by 2040.

The plan aims to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions by 62.8% per capita by 2030, with 2019 as the benchmark. The city wants to boost solar energy, use less energy, have more green space, and produce less food waste.

CapCon obtained more than 400 documents that residents and business owners sent to city officials, giving mixed feedback on the plan. Some supported the climate plan while others opposed it. Click here to read more.

Judicial Watch claims new FBI docs reveal warnings about suspicious person before Butler shooting

Judicial Watch revealed Thursday that new FBI documents it obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request revealed that law enforcement had issued a suspicious individual warning in Butler, Pennsylvania, before the 2024 assassination attempt on President Donald Trump.

The documents were part of a lawsuit Judicial Watch filed against the bureau last July after it failed to comply with a FOIA request on the shooting in 2024.

The records include a “FD-302” investigative report from July 16, 2024, which states that on the day of the shooting, law enforcement received radio reports about an “unknown male acting suspiciously.”

“One report included the unknown male looking at a law enforcement sniper position,” the report reads. “Several operators were communicating information about the unknown male back and forth over the radio--including to/from Command, to the Secret Service, to [Pennsylvania State Police], to ‘everybody.’” Click here to read more.

Border Patrol Stops Large Human Smuggling Attempt in California

Border Patrol agents in California have arrested 23 individuals in a human smuggling bust, according to Customs and Border Protection.

Four of the individuals arrested are believed to be human smugglers, and 19 are Mexican nationals, the agency reported.

Border Patrol agents spotted a vehicle on Jan. 31 in theEl Centro Sector of the U.S. border with Mexico, which they believed was being used for smuggling activity.

An investigation led agents to an apartment complex in Seeley, California, about 100 miles east of San Diego, where they saw individuals being transferred between vehicles.

Seven individuals attempted to flee the scene when agents approached, but officials pursued them. In addition to the 23 arrests, federal agents seized six vehicles that are connected to the investigation. Click here to read more.

Trump EPA repeals landmark carbon dioxide regulation

The Trump administration on Thursday revoked a scientific finding that long has been the central basis for U.S. action to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change, the most aggressive move by the president to roll back climate regulations.

The rule finalized by the Environmental Protection Agency rescinds a 2009 government declaration known as the endangerment finding that determined that carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases endanger public health and welfare.

The endangerment finding by the Obama administration is the legal underpinning of nearly all climate regulations under the Clean Air Act for motor vehicles, power plants and other pollution sources that are heating the planet. Click here to read more.

Lawmakers express bipartisan outrage as DOJ accused of ‘spying’ on members’ Epstein searches

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are accusing the Department of Justice (DOJ) of spying on them as they reviewed the unredacted Epstein files on DOJ computers, tracking the documents they examined.

Attorney General Pam BondiPam Bondi was photographed during a congressional appearance before the House Judiciary Committee Wednesday flipping to a document titled “Jayapal Pramila Search History,” seemingly reviewing the activity of the Washington Democrat who tangled with Bondi during the hearing.

Bondi had a binder at the ready of stats and crime summaries to hurl at lawmakers during the contentious hearing, but members are unnerved that the DOJ apparently tracked their searches to have at the ready.

BREAKING: Charges Dropped Against Michigan Duck Rescue Founders After DNR Case Collapses

The legal battle between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Michigan Duck Rescue and Sanctuary has come to an end. with all charges dismissed against the couple who run the operation.

Matthew and Teresa Lyson, founders of the Salem Township sanctuary, had faced six criminal charges each after state officials accused them of keeping and caring for waterfowl without proper permits. This week, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office dismissed the cases in their entirety, following months of public scrutiny and growing political pressure.

“This is great news,” Lyson told Keeping It Real. “All charges against me and Teresa are 100 percent gone. It’s a done deal, and we get to start new.”

Background of the Case

The Michigan Duck Rescue and Sanctuary has operated for nearly two decades, caring for injured or abandoned ducks, geese, and other waterfowl — many of which suffer from “angel wing,” a deformity often caused by people feeding them improper food. The Lysons say their work ...

Illinois gives $1.5M to ICE opponents

Illinois state lawmakers allocated a $1.5 million $1.5 million grant to the Hispanic chamber of commerce for “operating expenses.”

Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jaime di Paulo is outspoken against deportations of business owners, and has written an open letter calling for amnesty. His organization also published a guide for navigating ICE raids for business owners, and offers resources for government audits and “unexpected immigration-related challenges.”

The chamber provides services to Hispanic business owners, but why should state taxpayers fund them? Chambers of commerce across Illinois are funded by member dues. State funding of one chamber and not another effectively subsidizes some businesses over others. Click here to read more.

Whitmer’s Michigan missing out on jobs boom in Trump’s America

Jobs are booming in President Donald Trump’s America, but Michigan is missing out under Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

“Today’s blockbuster, expectation-shattering jobs report proves that President Trump’s economic agenda continues to pay off,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Kush Desai said in a statement Wednesday.

“The unemployment rate fell and private sector job growth remains robust – particularly for specialty trade construction jobs as the trillions in investments secured by the President pour into American manufacturing,” Desai said. “With new revisions showing the Biden jobs market was even worse than expected, President Trump continues to turn the page on the Biden disaster by rightsizing federal employment to the lowest level since 1966 and turbocharging economic growth.”

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released Wednesday shows nonfarm payroll jobs surged by 130,000 in January, when the private sector added 172,000 jobs and the government shed 42,000. Click here to read more.

Caring for Mom Is an Education in Scams and Fraud

It was summer 2021, and my mother’s desk was a mess, including a torn envelope from the IRS shoved in the back of a drawer.

“Mom?” I asked. “Did you pay your taxes?”

My mother, increasingly forgetful at 84, said she wasn’t sure. She told me to call her accountant of 30 years, who said the taxes hadn’t been paid but that he would take care of it.

That’s not all he took care of.

Within the year, a family member had my mother sign a blank check, which the accountant (or someone in his office) filled out for $25,000 to supposedly take over paying my mother’s bills – a task I was already doing. Instead of using the money for bills, the accountant paid himself the lion’s share of the funds. He then sent me an invoice for work I’d previously paid him for, at which point I told him never to contact my mother or me again. Click here to read more.

FDA declines to review Moderna’s mRNA flu shot application

Moderna said Tuesday that the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research told the company that it would not initiate a review of the investigational mRNA vaccine. The company has requested a Type A meeting with the FDA, which is a high-priority discussion, to “understand” a path forward.

CBER Director Vinayak Prasad said in a letter that the refusal was because Moderna chose a standard-dose seasonal flu vaccine that has already been licensed as a comparison, according to the company. He cited the lack of an “adequate and well-controlled” study with a comparison that “does not reflect the best-available standard of care.” shot application. Click here to read more.
