Big Pharma Wants To Turn Toad Venom Into The Next Blockbuster Drug
Big Pharma is making a high-stakes bet that their next cash grab will come from an unlikely source: the psychedelic venom of toads.
Pharmaceutical companies are pouring billions into a drug called 5-MeO-DMT, often known as bufo, a powerful psychedelic compound that is naturally found in the poison secreted from the Colorado River toad. Its growing popularity in Mexican clinics has caught the eye of major drugmakers and investors, who hope a synthetic version could eventually become an FDA-approved treatment, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The drug is illegal in the United States, but veterans who spoke with WSJ and have tried other mental health treatments, such as therapy or SSRIs, said ingesting it is “a last resort.” Click here to read more.
Michigan reading scores worse now than Whitmer vowed to fix literacy crisis
As Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s second term comes to a close, reading scores in public K-12 schools have gotten worse.
This year, Whitmer adopted an “Every Child Reads” proposal and appointed Michelle Richard as her senior literacy advisor.
“Gov. Whitmer talked about the importance of literacy in her first State of the State address in 2019 and in her final one this February,” Richard said in an article posted by the Michigan Education Association. “We’ve made important progress for kids during the governor’s term, and there’s still more to do to ensure all kids have a bright future and every child reads.”
Richard’s claim about Michigan making progress during Whitmer’s tenure deserves scrutiny.
Whitmer took office Jan. 1, 2019.

Organizer pleads guilty in Pennsylvania voter registration fraud case
A man who was accused of orchestrating a fraudulent voter registration scheme in Pennsylvania ahead of the 2024 presidential election has pleaded guilty.
In October 2024, district attorneys in multiple counties announced they had received thousands of voter registration applications that did not appear to be legitimate. The announcements made national news, and the incidents were eventually turned over to Attorney General Dave Sunday for prosecution.
Guillermo Sainz, who was in charge of the operation, pleaded guilty Monday to three misdemeanor counts of soliciting voter registrations and will face 30 days in jail, along with a $1,000 fine and 11 months probation. Click here to read more.

Former Navy SEAL sentenced in plot to throw fireworks at police during ‘No Kings’ protest
A former U.S. Navy SEAL who was convicted of transporting fireworks across state lines with plans to shoot explosives at police during last year’s “No Kings Day” protest in San Diego was sentenced to 16 months in prison.
Prosecutors said that on June 12, 2025, Gregory Vandenberg intended to use explosives against law enforcement officers at California protests and that his actions were motivated by extremist, antisemitic beliefs.
Vandenberg, 49, was traveling from El Paso, Texas, to San Diego, California, to attend the “No Kings Day” protests scheduled for June 14, 2025. While in New Mexico, Vandenberg visited a travel center off Interstate 10 near Lordsburg and purchased six large mortar fireworks, which are designed to shoot high into the air and explode, and 72 M-150 firecrackers, which are designed to sound like gunfire.
