AMHERST, Mass. (WKRC) - Each graduate at this college received a gift of $1,000 from their commencement speaker. But he asked them to do something with the money.
Robert Hale Jr. was the commencement speaker at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's 2024 ceremony. He gifted the roughly 1,200 new graduates some extra cash. Before giving out the money, he encouraged the graduates to not let failure define them by sharing a personal story where he lost nearly $1 billion overnight.
He then went on to share the greatest joy he and his wife have had in life.
"The greatest joys we've had in our life have been the gift of giving," said Hale. Click here to read more.

LANSING, Mich - Michigan House Republicans are vowing to fight a bill passed by the Senate that would strip investigatory and subpoena powers from County Boards of Canvassers granted to them in 1955.
The House Election Committee on Tuesday heard testimony on Senate Bills 603 and 604. Testifying on behalf of the bills were bill sponsors Sens. Stephanie Chang, D-Detroit, and Jeremy Moss, D-Southfield.
According to Chang, “Michigan has seen several recounts where the entity asking for a recount had no mathematical chance of changing the outcome in their favor based on the number of votes requested to be recounted. Also, under current Michigan law, precincts are not allowed to be recounted when the number of voters in poll books doesn’t match the number of ballots in the box, even if there is an explainable human error observed by the election worker, such as the voter walking out before turning in their ballot or the voter going to the wrong polling location.” Click here to read more.

MONTGOMERY, AL - Autoworkers at two Alabama Mercedes-Benz factories voted against a move to join the United Auto Workers union on Friday, breaking a string of unionizations in the South.
Unionization failed 56% to 44% with a total of 4,687 votes cast and 7% of eligible voters abstaining. The National Labor Relations Board said both sides will have to wait five days to file an objection. UAW President Shawn Fain told workers the results were not what the union had hoped for, but he said the UAW eventually will prevail. “These courageous workers reached out to us because they want justice,” he said.
Fain compared the unionization fight to the biblical David and Goliath. Sometimes Goliath wins a battle, “but ultimately, David will win the war,” he said. “These workers will win their fair share.”
In April, the UAW unionized workers at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, after two other tries. Click here to read more.
