DETROIT — A Venezuelan national wanted for kidnapping and torture in Colorado and linked to the violent Tren de Aragua gang was taken into custody in Michigan following a shoplifting incident, authorities said.
U.S. Border Patrol agents and Auburn Hills police responded to a call about a theft on Tuesday that escalated into the capture of the fugitive, according to Chief Patrol Agent Michael W. Banks. The suspect is now facing charges under 8 U.S.C. 1253 for willfully refusing to depart the United States.

Tren de Aragua, a transnational criminal organization originating in Venezuela, has expanded its reach into the U.S., engaging in drug trafficking, extortion, human smuggling, and violent crimes. Law enforcement agencies across the country have intensified efforts to dismantle the gang and apprehend its members.

The Biden administration has faced increasing pressure to address illegal immigration and gang-related crime, while former President Donald Trump has vowed to crack down on criminal organizations like Tren de Aragua if reelected. Trump has pledged to reinstate aggressive deportation policies and enhance border security measures to prevent gang members from entering the U.S.
“USBP and law enforcement partners remain relentless in the pursuit of these dangerous criminals,” Banks said in a statement.
The suspect remains in custody as authorities move forward with deportation proceedings.
